What is virus protection software and why should my business care about it?
To put it simply, virus protection software is a piece of software installed on your computer (or server/ mac) which is designed to prevent, detect and remove malicious software. AntiVirus software should be a top priority for your business. 1 in 3 business and organisations report being affected by a virus or malware attack. Also, as a small business, you are under threat now more than ever; big businesses have the resources to protect against an attack and so small business are being targeted more often.
Why is it important to choose a good AntiVirus?
Not all AntiVirus protection was created equally. A good, fully comprehensive AntiVirus solution can mean the difference between being secure and being compromised. You must ensure that whatever antivirus you are using that it is fully licenced, up to date and fit for business use.
An excellent antivirus will:
- Work without slowing your machine down
- Not nag you with pop-ups
- Use a real-time virus database
Will multiple AntiVirus programs make my computer safer?
No. Often AntiVirus programs with conflict with one another. Better to choose 1 program and stick to it. It is worth noting that you can run some antivirus solutions alongside antimalware programs.
What are the different kinds of viruses?
- Boot sector viruses: They infect the boot sector of a hard disk that is run when a device starts up, meaning they start running when that part of the disk is accessed.
- File infector viruses: These viruses infect program files, especially .com and .exe files, and can then infect other files when an infected program is run from a hard drive or the network. Many of these viruses are memory resident, according to Symantec, and after memory becomes infected any uninfected executable that runs becomes infected.
- Multipartite viruses: Such viruses infect both boot records and program files, and particularly difficult to repair.
- Master boot record viruses: These are memory resident viruses that infect disks in the same manner as boot sector viruses, according to Symantec. The key difference is that master boot record viruses typically save a legitimate copy of the master boot record in a different location.
- Macro viruses: These viruses infect data files and are the most common virus type. They also have cost corporations the most money and time trying to repair.
There are other virus types, such as network viruses that use local area networks and the internet to spread, typically through shared folders and drives; email viruses that are macro viruses spread through email messages; Trojan horse viruses that are files masquerading as desirable but are, in fact, malicious and cause data loss or theft when downloaded.
Why is AntiVirus not enough?
AntiVirus can protect computers to an extent but at this time most malware is down to user-initiated actions. Clicking a bad link, not paying attention to an installation, opening infected attachments etc. can all facilitate a security breach. AntiVirus software cannot always protect against a user executed application.
What security measures can be taken on top of AntiVirus software?
- User training! Make sure your team members are aware of the risks and exercise caution.
- Network administrator permissions can also prevent software from being installed by users as an extra step is required – putting in an admin password.
- If you do need to download software ensure that it is from the official website.
