Small business owners: iPad mini v Kindle Fire v Nexus 7 in fight for your attention!

In our Monday blog post Is your small business missing a new iPad mini? we showed you the benefits of using the iPad mini in your small business. The post generated some very interesting conversation with our clients asking about the suitability of other mini tablets for their business. That’s why we decided to write a blog post helping you pick the mini tablet that will work best for your business.

~Key insights ~

  • The iPad mini weighs less than any of the others, despite the larger screen. If you or your workers will carry a tablet around a lot, the iPad mini will be the lightest option.
  • The iPad mini costs a lot more than the others, and therefore will not be suitable if you are planning to cut your expenses.
  • Whereas you can run Hosted Exchange on all the iPad mini, the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire (you can access your email and calendar from multiple devices), only the iPad mini and the Nexus 7 are compatible with Google Apps for business, which will let you synchronise your Gmail, Gmail Contacts and Calendar.
  • All the iPad mini, the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7 can be run in kiosk mode, i.e. they can run a single application, letting you do a market survey, create an automatic quote, or for self check-in.

~ Summary~

The Nexus 7 and the iPad mini seem to be the most attractive devices for small business owners who need to keep mobile and also need to have instant access to all the apps and docs. Whereas the Nexus 7 is a very strong rival of the iPad mini as most of its hardware specs are in line with the iPad’s (such as high quality screen or excellent battery), the Fire is neither is as nicely built as the Nexus nor as fast or responsive as its rivals. Therefore, the ultimate point you may want to consider when choosing between the iPad mini and the Nexus 7 will be whether they have any Apps for iPad or Apps for Android (Nexus 7) that you particularly enjoy.
