What should you be looking for in a new computer?
With the release of Windows 10, many people are upgrading their hardware. There are benefits to this including speed, reliability and the likelihood of receiving a machine with Windows 10 preinstalled on it. We want to help, so here are some things you should think about before investing in new hardware for yourself or your business.
What are you using it for?
The first thing to consider when you are thinking of buying a new computer is what you use your current machine for and what would you like to be able to use it for!
A few questions to ask yourself:
- Do you mainly use your computer for work?
- Do you use it for accessing the internet?
- Do you use it for gaming?
- Is there anything you would like to be able to do that you can’t do now?
New computer or laptop specifications
For the most part the specifications of your new machine should be tailored to what you machine with predominantly be used for. However, here are the minimum requirements that we recommend for a new computer or laptop:
RAM (Random Access Memory) – 8GB RAM
Processor (CPU – Central Processing Unit) – Intel i5
HDD (Hard Drive Disk) – 500GB
Operating System – Windows 8.1
Other things to consider when buying a new PC or laptop
Portability – are you always on the go? If so it might be worth getting a laptop. If you travel but also need a set up at home you may need to consider a laptop with docking station options.
Software is a big determinant. Have you thought about your AntiVirus, BackUp, Microsoft Office, or any specialised programs (and whether they are compatible!)?
Migration of your data to your new system – how are you going to get everything from your old machine to your new one?
Extended warranties – What will you do if your investment goes wrong?
There are also many other things you should think about first, depending on your own personal situation. However, through careful planning and support your switch from old to new will be easy!
