Wireless: How secure is it?

Recently I was asked 2 questions about wireless technology.

Is it more secure to use a wireless internet connection or a wired one?

Is it better to use wireless technology or wired?

Today I am going to answer them for you.

Is it more secure to use a wireless internet connection or a wired one?

This boils down to vulnerability and security measures which you have put in place.

  • If you are using a wireless network in your home to access the internet but that wireless network is not protected by a strong password: You are vulnerable
  • If you are using a wired network in your home to access the internet but you have the wireless capability enabled and it is not protected by a strong password: You are vulnerable
  • If you are using a wireless network which is protected by a strong password: You are less vulnerable
  • If you are using a wireless network which is protected by a weak password: You are vulnerable
  • If you do not use the internet: You are not vulnerable

The truth is that a wireless internet connection is fractionally less secure than a wired one considering the use of security measures. Furthermore, wireless connections are generally easier and if you do all that you can to protect yourself from attack then there is no reason not to use one.

Realistically, the threat when accessing the internet does not come from the method with which you do it but by accessing it at all. However, it is generally not an option to avoid the internet completely and so it is about protecting yourself, your business and your colleagues as much as possible.

Is it better to use wireless technology or wired?
wireless

‘Better’ is kind of subjective. Assuming that in this case ‘better’ means easier then yes.

Wireless technology is not just our internet connections but the fact that we can wander around with a mobile phone, tablet and laptop. The nature of wireless is that you are not tied down with cables and wires; you are much freer to roam.

On the internet front wireless connectivity means expansion of the network is easier, you can enhance guest access and, it encourages mobility and productivity.

Although wired technology still has its place in the business world. Many businesses work in large old buildings, this can sometimes interfere with wireless internet connectivity and reliability. Machines which are wired into the network will take a minor precedence on internet access over someone connecting wirelessly and also wired connections tend to have a bit better speed.
