Keyboard Shortcuts

Below is a list of common shortcuts which will work in most web browsers!

  • Press F5 to refresh the page
  • Press the Alt and the D keys together to move the cursor into the address bar
  • Press F11 to make the browser screen full screen. Press F11 again to return it to normal
  • Press Ctrl and B keys to open your bookmarks
  • Press Ctrl and F to open a search box. You can use this search box to search the page you are on for key words or phrases
  • Press the backspace key to return to the last page that you were on

Create ‘Bookmarks’ of commonly visited pages.

Most web browsers have a bookmarking facility built in. You can use this to save web pages that you visit regularly.

Use your browser tabs

Rather than just having one window open in your browser you can have multiple. This allows you to multitask and flick between windows faster. To take full advantage of the tab facility; while reading any web page if you come across a link that interests you can open the link in a new tab so it does not interrupt your reading. A new tab can be opened by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the link or if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel you can press down on the wheel to use it as a middle mouse button to open the link in a new tab.

Quickly navigate between form fields

If you are on a webpage filling out a form or writing an email etc. you can move between data input fields quicker if you use the Tab key. To move to the next field you can press the Tab key or to move back a field you can press both Shift and Tab at the same time. More time with both hands on the keyboard means faster working.

Internet search engine – optimise your search

When using an internet search engine there are a few things you can do to speed up your search. Firstly, when you have typed your query into the search box you can hit the Enter key on your keyboard to start the search rather than clicking the search button with your mouse.Google-Search-Engine

When searching for key phrases such as computer repair, if you just search for computer repair it will show webpages that contain those words anywhere on the page. However, if you search computer repair in quotation marks (e.g “computer repair”) then it will show pages where the words computer repair are next to each other. This means you are more likely to find what you are looking for quickly.

Use a different browser

If you think that your browser is slowing you down when you work… it may be! If you are using a Windows PC it is likely that your machine came pre-installed with Internet Explorer and you may be using this. Many users chose to use a different browser like Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera, this is because usability and speed may be better. Browsers are free to download and there is no one better than the other; it is based on personal internet browsing preferences and working style.

All of these tips and tricks for using the internet may take a little bit of time to get used to and you may not always remember to use them but it is worth practicing and trying to get into the habit as it will save you time in the long run!
