How the 3-2-1 backup rule saved Andy!
We all know backup is important but oftentimes people won’t start seriously backing up their data until they lose something mission critical.
Ransomware VS Backup
2 weeks ago one of our customers, Andy, fell prey to a cyber attack by ransomware. We have spoken about cyber attacks before, in particular, ransomware, this malware takes all of your files and folders and encrypts them and then asks for a ransom fee (usually in Bitcoins) to release the files. The ransomware fee is usually upwards of £500.00 and there is no guarantee that you will receive the decryption key for your files and folders.
Despite the fact that Andy found his PCs infected with the ransomware and all of his company’s files were encrypted, all was not lost and due to following the ITC 3-2-1 backup rule Andy was back up and running within hours of the attack being identified.
(If you don’t know about the 3-2-1 rule take a look here: 3-2-1)
Ransomware is just one of the causes of data loss which business owners face including:
- Ransomware/ cyber attack/ viruses
- Human error
- Natural disaster
- Hardware failure
- Focused attack
- Software corruption
Moral of the story: don’t allow a drastic loss to make you realise the importance of backup
